Train the painter Affiliate FAQs

Who can become a Train the Painter Affiliate?

Companies and organisations with the appropriate industry expertise, training capability and facilities can apply to become a Train the painter Affiliate Training Provider.

An Affiliate Training Provider is approved to deliver Train the painter training to both its own employees and external customers within an agreed country. To deliver the programme, the Affiliate must have an Approved Trainer who meets the required industry experience or qualification criteria and has successfully completed the Train the Trainer course.

All applications are subject to approval by Corrodere Academy, and the proposed training facilities must meet the requirements for the safe and effective delivery of theoretical and practical training.

What qualifications do our training team need?

Train the painter training must be delivered by an Approved Trainer.

Before becoming an Approved Trainer, the nominated trainer must hold an appropriate Level 2 coating inspection qualification, such as NACE CIP Level 2, FROSIO Level 3, SSPC PCI Level 2 or ICorr Level 2, or have at least five years' relevant experience in the protective coatings industry as an Applicator, Supervisor, Manager or Inspector.

The nominated trainer must also successfully complete the two-day Train the Trainer programme before delivering Train the painter courses.

Additional approval may be required before a trainer can deliver supplementary or specialist Train the painter courses.

What facilities and equipment are required?

Affiliates must have access to suitable facilities for both theoretical learning and practical training and assessment.

Training facilities must include appropriate classroom provision and a safe environment in which practical activities can be carried out. Affiliates are responsible for ensuring that suitable risk assessments are in place, coatings and solvents are appropriately controlled, students have the required PPE and RPE, and all plant and equipment is safe, maintained and, where applicable, tested or certified.

Suitable test plates or an appropriate live structure must also be available for practical assessments.

The equipment required will depend on the courses being delivered. This can include surface-preparation tools, blasting equipment, spraying equipment, compressed-air or electrical supplies, abrasives, coatings and other practical training materials. Specialist courses may require additional facilities, such as an appropriate blast chamber or safe spray-painting area.

Corrodere Academy provides detailed practical assessment and equipment requirements as part of the Train the painter delivery model.

Can we deliver Train the Painter in more than one country?

A standard Affiliate Training Provider membership permits the Affiliate to deliver Train the painter training to internal employees and external customers within one agreed country.

Organisations wishing to deliver training across multiple countries should contact Corrodere Academy to discuss becoming a Global Affiliate Training Provider.

What is a Global Train The Painter Affiliate?

A Global Affiliate Training Provider is an organisation approved to deliver Train the painter training internationally rather than being restricted to a single country.

This option is designed for organisations that require a multi-country or worldwide training capability for internal employees and/or external customers.

Global Affiliate arrangements are agreed directly with Corrodere Academy. Please contact the Corrodere team to discuss eligibility, coverage and the requirements that apply to your organisation.

Which Train the Painter courses can Affiliates deliver?

Approved Affiliates can deliver the core Train the painter programme, subject to having appropriately approved trainers, facilities and equipment.

The core programme includes Protective Coating Application, Spray Painting and Abrasive Blast Cleaning.

Train the painter also offers additional and specialist programmes, including Coating Supervisor, Marine Coating Application, Thermal Metal Spraying, Thin Film Intumescent Coating Application, Thick Film Intumescent Coating Application and Powder Coating Application.

Approval to operate as an Affiliate does not automatically mean that every trainer is approved to deliver every supplementary course. Additional trainer approval, facilities, equipment or course-specific requirements may apply.

Please contact Corrodere Academy if you would like to add supplementary courses to your Affiliate's approved delivery scope.

Can training be delivered online?

Yes. Train the painter uses an interactive online training platform and Corrodere's digital learning resources to support course delivery.

For courses that include practical training or practical assessment, however, the practical element must still be completed in an appropriate practical environment and in accordance with the relevant assessment requirements.

For example, the Protective Coating Application course can be completed through flexible online theory learning followed by the required practical training.

The delivery format therefore depends on the individual course and its practical requirements.

How are practical assessments managed?

Practical assessments are carried out by Approved Trainers in accordance with the Train the painter practical assessment guidelines.

The training provider must ensure that the assessment environment is suitable and safe, that the required equipment and materials are available, and that appropriate risk assessments, PPE/RPE and safety controls are in place.

Approved Trainers have access to the Train the painter Practical Results App, which enables practical assessment results to be recorded and uploaded.

Corrodere also provides assessment guidance through the Train the painter training platform to help ensure assessments are delivered consistently.

How are qualification cards and certificates issued?

Once the required training and assessments have been successfully completed, Approved Trainers can apply for Train the painter certificates and ID cards on behalf of their students through the online training platform.

Train the painter qualifications are issued according to the courses completed and, where applicable, the student's practical industry experience.

Students who have completed the appropriate training but have not yet accumulated the required 1,600 hours of practical experience are issued a Trainee qualification rather than the full experienced-applicator qualification. Once the required experience has been demonstrated, the qualification can be upgraded in accordance with Train the painter requirements.

Train the painter ID cards and e-certificates are valid for five years, subject to the requirements of the relevant qualification. Digital ID cards can also be accessed through the Corrodere App.

What support do Affiliates receive?

Train the painter Affiliates and their Approved Trainers receive access to the resources required to support consistent delivery of the programme.

These include the online training platform, comprehensive training units and video content, theoretical and practical training and assessment guidance, student access to online learning materials, and digital tools including the Train the painter Logbook and Practical Results applications.

The platform also includes useful trainer resources covering areas such as conversions, spreading rates, coating breakdown, coating defects, surface preparation and industry terminology.

Affiliate membership also provides access to central marketing and sales resources and enables providers to operate as part of the international Train the painter network.

How does the Train the painer Affiliate approval process work?

The first step is to register your interest with Corrodere Academy and provide information about your organisation, proposed training location, facilities and nominated trainer.

Your nominated trainer must meet the Train the painter prerequisite requirements and successfully complete the two-day Train the Trainer programme.

Your training facilities must also meet Train the painter requirements for safe and effective theoretical and practical training. Affiliate members are subject to an audit as part of the approval process, with ongoing audits used to maintain programme standards.

Once the relevant requirements have been met and the Affiliate has been approved, your Approved Trainer can access the Train the painter training platform and begin delivering the courses included within your approved scope.

Corrodere Academy will guide applicants through the specific documentation, audit and approval requirements during the application process.

What does Train the Painter Affiliate membership cost?

For 2026, standard Train the painter Affiliate membership consists of a £250 joining fee and an annual membership fee of £2,750, giving a first-year membership cost of £3,000.

The Train the Trainer course is £750 plus VAT where applicable.

Additional costs apply for audits, student certification and ID cards, supplementary qualifications and other services. These charges depend on the qualification and services required.

Organisations interested in operating across multiple countries should contact Corrodere Academy directly for current Global Affiliate pricing and requirements.

All fees are subject to Corrodere Academy's current price schedule and VAT where applicable.
